SmoothEye®
What is Fotona SmoothEye® and how does it work?
Fotona SmoothEye® is a non-invasive laser treatment designed to rejuvenate the delicate skin around the eyes. It reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity while improving texture and tightness. The procedure uses Fotona’s advanced Er:YAG laser technology to stimulate collagen production and restore skin elasticity. Here’s how it works:
- Thermal Stimulation: The Er:YAG laser delivers controlled heat to the periocular (around the eyes) area. The laser targets the dermal (deeper) layer of the skin, triggering a natural wound-healing response without damaging the skin’s surface.
- Collagen Remodelling and Skin Tightening: The laser stimulates the production of new collagen fibres and remodels existing ones. This process tightens the skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging.
- Improved Hydration: The treatment enhances the skin’s natural barrier and improves hydration, leading to a smoother and more youthful appearance.
What are the key Benefits of SmoothEye®?
- Non-Invasive: SmoothEye® is a needle-free, surgery-free option for rejuvenating the eye area.
- Quick and Comfortable: The procedure is well-tolerated, with most patients experiencing only mild warmth during the treatment.
- Targeted Rejuvenation: Addresses specific concerns like crow’s feet, under-eye wrinkles and bags, upper eyelid hooding and loose skin around the eyes.
- Natural Results: By stimulating your body’s natural collagen production, the results are gradual and look natural.
- Minimal Downtime: Patients can return to their daily activities shortly after the procedure.
What to Expect During the Treatment?
- Preparation: The skin around the eyes is cleansed, and protective eyewear is provided to shield the eyes from the laser. A local anaesthetic may be applied by topical application or injection if is required, depending on your circumstances and the planned procedure.
- Laser Application: The Er:YAG laser is applied to the targeted areas in a series of short pulses. You will experience a sensation of warmth. Our practitioner would continue to ask you how you feel and the parameters are adjusted to your tolerance as it is delivered.
- Post-Treatment: The treated area may appear slightly red or feel warm, but this subsides within a few hours.
Who Is It For?
Fotona SmoothEye® is ideal for individuals who:
- Have mild to moderate wrinkles or sagging around the eyes.
- Want to improve skin texture and elasticity without invasive procedures.
- Seek a natural, gradual enhancement of the eye area.
How long will my Fotona SmoothEye® treatment take?
A Fotona SmoothEye® treatment typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. The exact duration depends on the size of the treatment area and the practitioner’s approach.
However, some additional treatments may be added to further improve the outcome, and this would lead to an additional 10-30 minutes of extra time.
You may want to discuss these options with our experienced practitioners during your consultation.
A breakdown of the procedure time is described below:
- Preparation (5–10 Minutes): The provider will cleanse the periocular area (skin around the eyes) and provide protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser. A local anaesthetic in the form of topical application of nerve block may be administered.
- Laser Application (15–20 Minutes): an eye shield may be inserted in special treatment protocols if the inner part of the eyelids are to be irradiated or in some situations where Nd:YAG laser is used. The Er:YAG laser is applied in a series of short, controlled pulses to the upper and lower eyelids and surrounding areas. The provider carefully adjusts the laser’s settings for optimal results based on your skin type and concerns.
- Post-Treatment (5 Minutes): The treated area is soothed with a gentle moisturizer or cooling cream. Post-treatment instructions will be provided.
When will I notice results from my Fotona SmoothEye® treatment?
You may start noticing results from your Fotona SmoothEye® treatment within a few weeks, but the full effects take time as your body produces new collagen. Here’s a detailed timeline of what to expect:
- Right After the Treatment: Some patients notice a subtle tightening effect due to the immediate contraction of collagen fibres caused by the laser. The skin may feel smoother and slightly firmer, but visible changes in wrinkles or laxity are not yet apparent.
- 1–2 Weeks: Early improvements in skin texture and hydration become visible as the skin begins to heal and repair. Fine lines may appear slightly softened.
- 6–12 Weeks: Collagen production ramps up, leading to noticeable improvements in skin elasticity, firmness, and a reduction in fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes. The skin appears more refreshed and rejuvenated.
- 3–6 Months: The full benefits of SmoothEye® become apparent as collagen remodelling continues. Wrinkles, fine lines, and loose skin are significantly improved, resulting in a more youthful and smoother eye area.
Why did I not get the expected results? Are there things that Influence the Results?
Yes, not everyone would get the outcome that is expected from this procedure, there are several factors that play part in the final outcome. Here are common reasons:
- Skin Condition: Individuals with mild to moderate wrinkles typically see faster and more noticeable results. Severe changes may not recover as fast and may need either combination treatment with other modalities, increasing the number of the initial treatment sessions, and shortening the interval time between maintenance sessions.
- Age: Younger patients may experience quicker collagen production, while older individuals may require more time or additional sessions.
- Lifestyle: Proper hydration, sun protection, and a healthy skincare routine can enhance and prolong the results. Smoking cessation is an important lifestyle change that would immensely help in the rejuvenation process.
- Additional treatment modalities: As indicated application of additional treatment modalities such as resurfacing, Nd:YAG laser therapy, use of exosomes, PRP, PDRN would accelerate and augment the regenerative process with better short- and long-term outcomes.
- Initial treatment package and Maintenance: Adherence to the recommended number of sessions in the initial treatment phase and maintenance treatment thereafter is also a very crucial factor in obtaining the best results.
- No Maximum number of sessions: It is to be noted that you can request treatment as many times as you feel you are comfortable to do. The more treatment sessions applied the more likely the outcome is improved.
How long do the results of Fotona SmoothEye® last?
The results of Fotona SmoothEye® are long-lasting, but not permanent, as they depend on your skin’s natural aging process and collagen turnover. Here’s what you can expect regarding the longevity of your results:
- Initial Results: After completing a series of 4 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart, the improvements in skin texture, tightness, and elasticity can last for 6–12 months.
- Long-Term Maintenance: With proper maintenance and a healthy skincare routine, the results can be sustained for a longer period. Maintenance treatments every 6–12 months help preserve collagen levels and prolong the effects.
There are several factors that affect longevity of results:
- Natural Aging: Collagen naturally breaks down over time, which can diminish the skin-tightening effects of the treatment.
- Sun Exposure: Excessive sun exposure without proper protection can accelerate collagen breakdown and reduce the longevity of results.
- Smoking: Smoking impairs collagen production and skin health, shortening the results.
- Diet and Hydration: A healthy diet and staying hydrated can help maintain skin elasticity and prolong the effects.
- Skin Care Routine: Using collagen-boosting products, hydrating creams, and SPF can help maintain the benefits of the treatment.
- Combination Treatments: Combining SmoothEye® with other aesthetic procedures, such as microneedling, PRP, or laser resurfacing, can enhance and extend results.
- After Initial Treatment Series: A touch-up session every 6–12 months is recommended to maintain the results.
How is Fotona SmoothEye® procedure performed?
1. Consultation and Preparation

- Cleansing: The area around your eyes is gently cleansed to remove makeup, oils, and debris.
- Protective Eyewear: Protective goggles are placed over your eyes to shield them from the laser energy.
2. Laser Application
- Er:YAG Laser in SMOOTH® Mode is used.
- The Er:YAG laser is applied to the upper and lower eyelids, as well as the surrounding skin.
- The laser uses non-ablative thermal energy, which penetrates the skin’s deeper layers without damaging the surface.
- The provider may make several passes with the laser to ensure even coverage and optimal results.
- Additional treatment modalities are entertained if pre-planned.
3. Post-Treatment Care
- Cooling or Moisturizing: A soothing cream or hydrating product may be applied to the treated area to reduce any temporary warmth or redness.
- Post-Treatment Instructions: Your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions to follow for the best results.
What to Expect During the Procedure?
Most patients report feeling a mild warmth or tingling sensation as the laser is applied. The treatment is generally comfortable and often used without anaesthesia, however, if you have a sensitive skin, or more intense treatment is prescribed by our practitioners, or additional treatment modalities of other forms of laser are added then a local anaesthetic in the form of topical application or regional block may be used.
How do I prepare for my Fotona SmoothEye® treatment?
Proper preparation for your SmoothEye® treatment ensures optimal results and a smooth procedure. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- At consultation, discuss your goals and share your desired outcome within the realm of real expectations. This will be further explained by our practitioners.
- Although specifically asked, ensure that our practitioners are aware of any health conditions, medications, allergies and previous lip treatments provided such as fillers, tattoos or surgery.
- Meanwhile, avoid direct sunlight and apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ for a week prior to your scheduled date.
- Discontinue the use of exfoliants (retinoids, AHAs “glycolic acid” BHA “Salicylic acid” etc) for 3 days prior to the treatment day.
- Stay well hydrated at all times by drinking adequate amounts of water.
- If you have a history of cold sores, you must let our practitioners know to be able to prescribe a course of antiviral medication to take starting at least 2 days before the scheduled treatment day and to continue for a total of 7 days.
- If you take any supplements that may thin the blood, such as fish oil, ginkgo biloba, St. John’s wort, vitamin E, ginseng, should be stopped for a minimum of 3 days before your treatment day. If you are taking a blood thinner for a medical reason our practitioner will discuss the appropriate measures to be taken beforehand. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories should be stopped at least 3 days before treatment is initiated.
- On the day of your scheduled treatment, arrive with clean face, no makeup, or topicals of any form.
- Refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking for at least one week prior to your scheduled treatment, and preferably to continue for another week post treatment.
- If you had any eyelid or eyebrow treatment such as fillers, surgery, plasma or tattooing it is best to schedule your SmoothEye® treatment at least 4-6 weeks later. You should also avoid chemical peels, laser treatments, or microneedling in the treatment area for at least 2 weeks before SmoothEye®.
Is Fotona SmoothEye® painful?
No, Fotona SmoothEye® is not usually painful for most patients. Generally, most patients feel a mild warming or tingling sensation on the lids and surrounding area. In some situations where patients have sensitive skin or more intense treatment is required to achieve more pronounced results a local anaesthetic may be required, which is delivered either as a topical application or by injection to block the nerves supplying the treatment area.
After the procedure feeling of mild warmth, and tightness may be encountered subsiding after a few hours. There will be increased lid sensitivity in the following day or two which may be accompanied by skin dryness and minimal exfoliation resolving in 2-3 days.
There is no downtime, and you can resume your normal activities immediately after treatment.
Fotona SmoothEye® aftercare?
Proper aftercare following a Fotona SmoothEye® treatment is essential to maximize results, minimize side effects, and promote smooth healing. Here’s a detailed guide to post-treatment care:
- Soothing the Skin: Apply a gentle, hydrating cream or balm recommended by your provider to keep the skin moisturized and reduce any mild redness or warmth. Avoid harsh or fragranced products on the treated area for at least 24–48 hours.
- Sun Protection: Protect the treated area with a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+). This is crucial to prevent hyperpigmentation and protect the skin as it heals. Avoid direct sun exposure or tanning beds for at least 1–2 weeks after the procedure.
- Avoid Touching: Refrain from rubbing, scratching, or touching the treated area to prevent irritation.
- Heat Exposure: Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and intense exercise for the first 24–48 hours to minimize skin irritation and swelling.
- Makeup: Avoid applying makeup or heavy products around the eyes for at least 24 hours, or as directed by your provider.
- Exfoliants and Actives: Do not use exfoliating scrubs, retinoids, or products containing acids (e.g., glycolic acid, salicylic acid) for at least 5–7 days.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from within and support healing.
- Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, non-irritating cleanser to wash your face. Avoid vigorous scrubbing around the treated area.
- Moisturize Regularly: Keep the skin around your eyes well-moisturized with a cream or serum recommended by your provider, especially products that promote collagen and elasticity.
- Expected Reactions: Redness and warmth is normal and typically resolves within a few hours to 1–2 days. A feeling of skin tightness is common as the collagen begins to rebuild.
- Follow-Up Treatments: To achieve optimal results, ensure you organise your subsequent treatments as prescribed by our practitioners in your initial treatment package. These should be spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
- Long term Regular Skin Care: Use eye creams or serums with collagen-boosting ingredients (e.g., peptides, hyaluronic acid) to maintain results.
- Maintenance Sessions: Maintenance treatments every 6–12 months can help sustain the improvements in skin elasticity and texture.
How often can I have Fotona SmoothEye® treatments?
The frequency of Fotona SmoothEye® treatments depends on your skin condition, aesthetic goals, and the recommendations of your provider. There is no maximum number of treatment sessions needed, as more sessions generally are associated with improved outcomes. However, a minimum number of sessions is needed in the initial treatment phase of 4 sessions separated at intervals of 4-6 weeks.
A maintenance session will be required to support the achieved results and further improve outcomes. This would need to be scheduled at intervals of 6-12 months. There may be a need for a three-monthly maintenance in difficult cases with suboptimal results.
Are Fotona SmoothEye® treatments safe?
Yes, Fotona SmoothEye® treatments are considered safe when performed by a trained and qualified provider. The procedure uses Fotona’s Er:YAG laser technology, which is designed to deliver controlled energy to the skin around the eyes without damaging the surface. Here’s why it’s a safe and effective treatment:
- Non-Invasive: The treatment is non-invasive, meaning it does not involve needles, incisions, or significant tissue disruption.
- Controlled Energy Delivery: The Er:YAG laser operates in SMOOTH® mode, which delivers energy gently and evenly to the deeper layers of the skin, avoiding damage to the epidermis (surface layer).
- TGA Listed Technology: Fotona’s laser systems are TGA listed and CE-marked, ensuring they meet rigorous safety and quality standards.
- Minimal Risk of Complications: When performed by our experienced practitioners, the treatment has a low risk of side effects and complications.
- Adjustable Settings: The laser’s intensity can be customized based on your skin type and sensitivity, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience.
Who Should Avoid SmoothEye® Treatment?
The treatment may not be suitable for individuals with:
- Active Infections or Skin Conditions: Avoid treatment if you have an active skin infection, eczema, or open wounds near the eyes. Once controlled treatment can be scheduled.
- Pregnancy or Breastfeeding: While there’s no evidence of harm, any aesthetic treatments during pregnancy or breastfeeding are generally contraindicated. Once completed your pregnancy and breastfeeding we will be happy to accommodate you.
- Recent Sunburn: Sunburned or irritated skin should fully heal before treatment.
- Severe Skin Sensitivity: Individuals with very reactive or hypersensitive skin may require a different approach. We will be able to help in this regard when discussed in your consultation.
Is Fotona SmoothEye® suitable for all skin types?
Yes, Fotona SmoothEye® is suitable for all skin types (Fitzpatrick types I–VI). The treatment uses Er:YAG laser technology, which is designed to deliver controlled energy in a way that is safe and effective for various skin tones and conditions. Here’s why SmoothEye® is compatible with all skin types:
- Non-Ablative Technology: The Er:YAG laser operates in SMOOTH® mode, which penetrates the deeper layers of the skin without damaging the surface. This makes it safe for even the most sensitive skin.
- Minimal Melanin Interaction: Unlike some laser treatments that target melanin (the pigment in skin), SmoothEye® focuses on collagen stimulation in the dermis. This minimizes the risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, which can be concerns for darker skin tones.
- Adjustable Settings: The laser’s energy and intensity can be customized by the provider to suit individual skin types, ensuring both safety and effectiveness.
- Gentle on Delicate Areas: The treatment is designed for the delicate skin around the eyes, making it appropriate for all skin types, including those prone to sensitivity.
Can I combine Fotona SmoothEye® with other aesthetic treatments?
Yes, Fotona SmoothEye® can be safely combined with other aesthetic treatments to enhance results and address multiple concerns simultaneously. Combining treatments allows for a more comprehensive rejuvenation plan and can be tailored to your individual goals.
- Any form of additional treatment to address concerns in the face and body other than the eyelids can be used liberally without restrictions. These treatment modalities may include Botulinum Toxin, Dermal Fillers, Chemical Peels, Microneedling, RF Microneedling, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), Laser Skin Resurfacing, Fotona 4D® Treatments, HIFU, RF resurfacing and rejuvenation, Biostimulators/Biomodulators.
- On the other hand, additional treatment to enhance the results of the SmoothEye® can also be considered and these may be done concomitantly or before or after the SmoothEye® treatment.
- Treatments that can be done in the same sitting with SmoothEye® include additional laser therapy such as Er:YAG resurfacing, Er:YAG laser rejuvenation or skin tightening, application of PRP, exosomes or PDRN.
- The use of fillers, or botulinum toxin treatment in the periorbital area should best be deferred for a period of 4 weeks, or alternatively the SmoothEye® treatment is deferred for 4 weeks after these treatments.
How much downtime do I need after SmoothEye® treatment?
Fotona SmoothEye® treatments require minimal to no downtime, making it an excellent option for individuals with busy schedules. Most patients can return to their daily activities immediately after the procedure. There are situations where a more intense treatment may be required which would slightly incur an increase in the downtime period. This will be discussed in the consultation with our practitioners if indicated.
There will be some slight skin changes that are unlikely to lead to significant downtime, worth mentioning here:
- Mild Redness or Warmth: The treated area may appear slightly red or feel warm immediately after the procedure. This is a normal reaction to the laser and typically subsides within a few hours to 1–2 days.
- Sensitivity: The skin around the eyes may feel slightly tight or sensitive, but this is temporary.
- Sometimes the skin may become dry with some scaling; this is minimised if regular use of moisturisers and the prescribed postoperative instructions are adhered to.
