Laser Treatment of Leg Telangiectasias (Spider Veins) with Fotona Laser
Laser treatment of leg telangiectasias is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat small visible red, blue, or purple veins on the legs, commonly known as spider veins. Using advanced Fotona laser technology, targeted laser energy is delivered into the unwanted blood vessels, causing them to gradually collapse and be absorbed by the body.
This treatment can improve the appearance of visible veins and may be used alone or in combination with sclerotherapy, depending on the size and type of veins being treated.
Laser Technology Used
Treatment is typically performed using the Fotona Long-Pulsed Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser.
The Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates deeply into the skin and is selectively absorbed by blood within the vein. The laser energy heats the vessel wall, causing the vein to close while minimizing damage to the surrounding skin.
This technology is particularly useful for:
- Fine red spider veins
- Blue telangiectasias
- Small reticular veins
- Veins that are difficult to inject with sclerotherapy
- Residual veins following sclerotherapy or EVLA
Benefits May Include
- Reduction in visible spider veins
- Improvement in the cosmetic appearance of the legs
- Non-surgical treatment
- No injections required for selected veins
- Minimal downtime
- Treatment of veins unsuitable for sclerotherapy
- Can be combined with other vein treatments
Typical Treatment Protocol
- Initial consultation and vein assessment.
- Duplex ultrasound examination may be recommended if larger veins are present.
- Treatment sessions typically last 15–45 minutes.
- Most patients require 1–6 treatment sessions, depending on the size, number, and depth of veins.
- Treatments are usually spaced 6–12 weeks apart.
Recovery
Following treatment, patients may experience:
- Mild redness
- Temporary swelling
- Mild tenderness
- Temporary darkening of treated veins
- Occasional bruising
Most patients can return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
Walking is encouraged, and compression stockings may be recommended in selected cases.
Important Information
Results develop gradually as the body absorbs the treated veins over several weeks to months.
Larger reticular veins and varicose veins may require treatment before the smaller spider veins can be successfully treated. In many patients, combining laser treatment with sclerotherapy provides the best cosmetic outcome.
Potential Risks and Side Effects
Potential side effects may include:
- Temporary redness and swelling
- Bruising
- Skin pigmentation changes
- Small crusts or blistering (uncommon)
- Incomplete vein clearance requiring additional treatments
- Recurrence of veins over time
Additional and Alternative Treatment Options
Depending on the size and type of veins, alternative or complementary treatments may include:
- Microsclerotherapy
- Foam sclerotherapy
- Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy
- Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
- Compression therapy
