Vasectomy

A vasectomy is a safe and effective permanent form of contraception for men. The procedure works by blocking the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. After a vasectomy, sperm can no longer mix with the semen, preventing pregnancy while preserving normal sexual function.

At our clinic, vasectomy is performed as a minor procedure under local anaesthetic, allowing most patients to return home shortly after treatment.

What Happens During the Procedure?

After the area is numbed with local anaesthetic, a small opening is made in the skin of the scrotum. The vas deferens on each side is identified, divided, and sealed using established surgical techniques. The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes.

Recovery

Most patients experience mild discomfort, bruising, or swelling for a few days following the procedure.

Typical recovery includes:

• Returning home shortly after the procedure
• Light activities within 24–48 hours
• Returning to office-based work within a few days
• Avoiding strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for approximately one week
• Wearing supportive underwear during the recovery period

Important Information

A vasectomy should be considered permanent contraception. Although reversal procedures exist, successful restoration of fertility cannot be guaranteed.

It is important to understand that:

• Vasectomy does not provide immediate contraception.
• Sperm may remain in the reproductive system for several months after the procedure.
• Alternative contraception must be used until a semen analysis confirms the absence of sperm.
• Vasectomy does not affect testosterone levels, sexual desire (libido), erections, ejaculation, or sexual pleasure.

Follow-Up

A semen analysis is required after the procedure to confirm that no sperm remain in the semen. Until this result is confirmed, alternative contraception must continue to be used.
